Every Two Seconds A Family Pet is Lost: Chips are a safety net for lost pets
Losing a pet is heartbreaking. And it’s sad to think that in America a family pet is lost every two seconds.
But thanks to a modern technology there is now a time tested and trusted way for your pet to never leave home without her identity again. An ID Chip
is the professional, proven, and safe way to identify your pet wherever she goes. The tiny ID Chip is injected like a vaccination where it remains with your pet safely for
life! Each Chip contains a one-of-a-kind identification number that distinguishes your pet as a special member of your family.
When a lost pet is found by one of more than 17,000 participating veterinary hospitals, shelters, or pet
organizations, a scanner is used to check the pet for an ID Chip. Once a Chip number is identified it only takes one phone call to initiate a quick search of the PETtracTM database, to determine the pet’s family,
family veterinarian, and alternate contacts. Then your pet comes home!
Notably, Pennsylvania now allows the ID Chip to be used as permanent identification for obtaining a lifetime dog license for your classy canine.
At Fairview Veterinary Hospital we have been providing this technology, and access to its safety net, for over 7 years.
Imagine the phone call when your lost pet is found!

Rabies in Erie County!
Rabies continues to be a problem in Erie County, PA.
Rabies is a virus that is transmitted from infected animals biting other animals, from infected animals biting
people, and from infected animal’s saliva contacting people’s injured skin and mucous membranes. In people, if rabies exposure is suspected after infection but before rabies symptoms develop then post
exposure treatment is very successful at saving human life. However, once a human rabies virus infection develops symptoms their is typically NO CURE.
It is of great importance to prevent your pets from being a potential source of rabies exposure to your family
and your neighbors. Please consider the following precautions to help shield your family from exposure to rabies virus:
- Keep all your pets current on their rabies vaccine. We recommend an annual rabies vaccination. The Rabies Vaccine is available at Fairview Veterinary Hospital for $11 total cost
, six days a week by appointment. Unlike other hospitals, at Fairview Veterinary Hospital there is no exam fee to obtain
a rabies vaccine. Additionally we offer the convenience of rabies vaccination at our Pet Drive Through Window.
- Teach this valuable lesson to your children, and practice what you preach: NEVER touch wild
animals, bats, or stray animals. If you see a stray cat, dog, or domestic animal then contact your local Animal Control Officer to capture it. If you see menacing wildlife contact the PA Game Commission for
help.
- Any mammal can carry the rabies virus. The more common carriers are bats, raccoons, skunks, feral cats, and feral dogs.
- Keep your loving pet where it is the safest...indoors! If your pet is outside then be with them the entire
time. Contact your pet’s veterinary hospital if your pet contacts wildlife or feral animals.
- Avoid feeding wildlife so you don’t attract wild animals carrying rabies to your home and yard.
- Animals can carry and spread rabies virus without ever acting ill.
- Bat exposure is now the most common cause of human rabies deaths in the U.S.A and Canada. If you
find any bat in your home, or if you or a loved one comes in contact with a bat inside or outside your home, then immediately contact the Health Department or Department of Agriculture. NEVER NEVER
NEVER HANDLE A BAT, even if you think it may be dead.
- Support efforts to vaccinate wildlife through the government’s wildlife rabies vaccine bait program.
Every year thousands of wildlife rabies vaccine baits are spread through our region by airplane. This initiative is the best long-term solution toward the goal of rabies virus eradication in our area.
Tick Preventives
Nobody likes ticks (except, we suppose, for other ticks!). First, ticks can cause infection and
allergic-inflamatory reactions localized to the tick-bite area. Second, ticks can spread serious, potentially
life threatening diseases to our pets like Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichia, and
Babesia among others. Adding insult to injury, ticks can hitch a ride on your pet into your home, where they
can become a risk to biting, and spreading disease to, people in your house. Preventive care makes a lot more sense for our loved ones than having to treat a preventable illness.
Our loving pets deserve the best, safest tick preventives that science has to offer!
For our feline friends one of the best choice is Prescription FrontlineTM and based on your kitty’s outdoor
habits and on-file medical history we are glad to customize a tick preventive program for your favorite feline!
For our classy canine friends, in addition to Prescription FrontlineTM we are pleased to introduce
Prescription AdvantixTM. Advantix is only for dogs! It repels fleas, ticks, and mosquitos. Advantix may be
especially helpful for those dogs that experience tick attachments despite being on Frontline, and for dogs that are outdoors (especially during sunrise and sunset - the peak times for mosquito bites and thus West
Nile Virus infection). Based on your pooch’s outdoor habits and on-file medical history we are glad to customize a tick preventive program for your favorite canine friend!
